On March 15, 2010, D.A. Nichols announced the possibility of a sequel to The Art Appreciation. Then in November 2012, Warner Bros. Pictures gave the green light for production on the sequel.

In March 2013, it was confirmed that Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Brooke Nevin, Sean Penn, and Matt Lanter would return to reprise their roles. Then in April 2013, Ginnifer Goodwin was cast to do the voice of Jet Fowler, since Amanda Bynes was unable to return due to her retirement from acting. That same month, it was confirmed that Eddie Izzard would voice new character, Mr. Robinson, Alice's new art teacher after Mr. Clements retired at the end of the first film.

Cancelled sequel[]

In addition to The Art Apppreciation 2: The Senior Semester, NicThic Productions had plans for a third film. It was going to have Alice Cushman's life in college working on more artwork.

On March 17, 2015, Warner Bros. stated that the third film was cancelled due to story problems.
